The lake is in a depression about 30' high; you park your car there, then head down to the water to windsurf/etc in summer, fly kites in winter, or, as you can see in this shot, go ice sailing. As I got there this time, the sun was just setting; so I literally ran backwards along the cliff around the edge of the lake trying to keep ahead of the setting sun. This and the next shot happened to be timed just about right.

Same as the previous photo, but 20 feet further back and 20 seconds later.

Yes, that is an ear tag. Wild denizens of the prairies, these aren't.

Buffalo aren't all that rare around here; there's a farmer's field on the way down highway 1A on the way to Ghost that has a (tiny) herd of them just sitting there eating grass. Not sure what their eventual fate is, but I suspect burgers.

The lake itself freezes solidly to a depth of a few feet -- but as the temperature changes, the ice shifts creating big cracks all the way down. It's still perfectly safe, but it can be very disconcerting seeing that much almost-nothing below you until you get used to it.

There's lots of neat shear lines in the ice; the coolest thing is the occasional column of frozen bubbles, though those turned out to be next to impossible to photograph (or possibly it was just that my hands were too cold by that point)
